I managed to patch mine in ~4 hours, but i started yesterday within 5 minutes of the patch becoming available (about 5pm east Aus time (UTC+10)). I have a feeling that the majority of issues are being caused by the number of people trying to download the client at once (more connections to the server = less speed per connection) but i have several issues with the way updates work.
Firstly, it appears that if a connection to the server is lost, it has to restart from scratch, whereas it would make far more sense (imo) if the client/server were configured to allow loss of connection, even pauses and resumes (like Steam downloads for example).
Secondly, on the topic of manually downloading patches, there is a section on the downloads page here that states: "Manual patches can be used to update your client. Only use them if you have difficulty updating your game client." There is no other info on the topic, no links or even proof that such a method exists. I think that the vast majority of the people who have posted here fit the "if you have difficulty updating your game client" category, myself included (as this is the first time i have been able to patch this game in under 10 hours). It would be greatly appreciated if somebody in-the-know (i.e. moderators, admins etc) could verify the state of manual patching.
EDIT: i found this, hope it can help some of you guys

Interestingly enough all of the posts here are from players, not even one post from a dev explaining things. It makes me wonder, do they even read these threads.
as for the problem of the slow patch I think the best thing to do is try to patch the game before you go to bed and pray that when you wake up in the morning it will be showing 100% and the play button
